[anime club] Japan Matsuri
Since no anime club existed at the University of Rochester, the students decided to take action.
In 2007, Anime Club was established as a subcomittee underneath the group Japan Matsuri (SA funded).
Anime and other forms of media could be used to educate the campus about Japanese culture and history. So, for a brief moment in time, anime club was known as the Japanese Media Assembly. However, when the 2011 freshman activities fair rolled around, the name was changed back into the simple "anime club" to prevent confusion and encourage member recruitment.
So, until this club lives longer than a semester, this is all of the history of anime club you'll need to know.
What about the students themselves? The picture here shows students at our very first event: a barbecue lunch with watermelon smashing. Much food was to be had, but alas, too much of our funding was spent on all that delicious food. On a side note, smashing watermelons was, surprisingly, very stress relieving.
Our Mission Statement
We believe in peace & love.
...through anime. It is only through anime that we can achieve true happiness. For example, we foster community through our love of anime. This community is especially diverse in the types of people present. No other group on campus can boast that they embrace this diversity. Anime shows depict the lives of many different individuals (i.e. Moyashimon depicts microbiologists and their struggles with life; REC depicts the hardships of being a voice actress; Bleach depicts the intricacies of being a substitute Shinigami with Vaizard powers; etc. etc.). Through anime, the viewers may understand life from a different perspective, and if one of their peers is going to become a microbiologist, voice-actress, or substitute Shinigami with Vaizard powers, everyone has already been exposed to what that individual might feel.
But mostly, we advocate fun.
